Palma is brimming with different things to do. As the capital city of the island, it’s one of the busiest places to visit and is well equipped for tourists of all ages and interests.

Not only can you get a taste of many of Mallorca’s fiestas in Palma, but the city also holds a wealth of history. The Santa Maria Cathedral is the main point of interest for many who visit here. The impressive cathedral doesn’t only hold huge religious significance but it is also home to some of the most beautiful architecture on the island.

Santa Maria is also a prevalent spot in Palma where many religious events are held. One of the celebrations at the cathedral is the Light Show, this is when crowds gather to watch as the sunlight beams through the impressive stained glass window while a service is held for all those in attendance.

Visit Alcúdia Old Town

Alcúdia is a very popular Mallorcan town on the north of the island that is known for its unbeatable combination of beautiful beaches and rich cultural history. One of the highlights for visitors sightseeing in Alcúdia is the Old Town, which was originally constructed in the mediaeval era.

Despite the centuries that have now passed, Alcúdia’s Old Town remains wonderfully preserved. One of the highlights is the city walls, which are almost entirely intact in places and can be walked around if you want to see the area from a superior viewpoint. There’s also a weekly market, which provides some of the best local shopping opportunities on the island.

Experience Drach Caves

If cities and shopping aren’t really what you are looking for whilst on holiday and you fancy something a little more adventurous, then a visit to Drach Caves at Porto Cristo is  exactly what you’re looking for.

Drach Caves are four caving spots that have an impressive depth of 25m with an approximate length of 4km, offering plenty of space to explore. The tours at Drach caves are perfect for those wanting to investigate the underground hiding places further, all whilst finding out some pretty incredible information about the appearance of the caves.

These caves are also special because they contain Lake Martel, which is regarded as one of the world’s biggest underground lakes. Not only do you get the chance to enjoy a thrilling caving adventure, but the tours also include a short, live classical music performance by a string quartet, to add a magical element to the experience.

Climb to the Calvario Mount

Pollensa is a town that’s definitely worth a visit if you’re coming to Mallorca on holiday, and one of the best things to do there is climbing the Calvario Mount which is one a hillside overlooking the town. This viewpoint was once known as the Templars Mount, named after the famous Knights Templars that lived on the island in the 13th century.

There are 365 steps up the hill to the Calvario Mount, so make sure you pack a water bottle if you’re planning on climbing up them on a hot day! There’s a small cafe at the top and incredible views over the coastline, making it an ideal spot for a photograph.

Hit the Beach

Mallorca is a particularly popular spot amongst travellers angling for a beach holiday, thanks to the island’s brilliant coastline and Mediterranean weather. There are hundreds of beaches to choose from scattered around the Mallorca, ranging from pristine expanses of sand managed by holiday resorts to secluded little coves that require a local guide to uncover. Here are some of our top recommendations for beaches in Mallorca.

Cala Formentor

For a classic Mallorcan beach experience, head to Cala Formentor on the northeast of the island. Surrounded by the Formentor mountain range, this is one of the longest beaches in Mallorca that can get quite busy in the summer, but is still definitely worth a visit because of the stunning views on offer from the shore and the wonderfully calm and clear water.

Cala Gran

Cala Gran is the largest beach in the town of Cala D’or, consisting of almost 50 metres of pure white sand that is lapped by gentle blue waves. It’s a great spot to visit if you’re planning on spending the whole day by the sea, as there are plenty of beach bars, cafes and facilities nearby that means you don’t have to move far to find everything you might need.

Cala Barques

Cala Barques is one of the three small beaches near the small resort town of Cala Sant Viçenc, and offers a totally different experience to some of the larger and more touristy beaches. It’s a small spot, but the scenery around it is absolutely gorgeous, with rocky cliffs rising up behind the sand on one side.

S’Amarador

If you’re looking for beautiful coastal landscapes when you visit the beach in Mallorca, S’Amarador should be at the top of your list. Situated within the Mondragó Natural Park, you can park your car and then venture down to the beach on foot, enjoying a large expanse of sand that never gets overly busy. This is a great beach for families in particular, as the water is pretty shallow and very calm.

Take a Boat Trip

Picture this; you’re on your holiday in Mallorca, sailing across the Mediterranean sea in a lavish yacht, drink in hand with the sun beaming down. Well, you don’t have to imagine, because you have the option to do just that whilst on your trip to the island.

Boat trips are very popular among tourists when visiting Mallorca and are a great way to explore the island from a different perspective. With excursions happening from most of the major ports on the island, you don’t have to worry about searching high and low for a sailing adventure in Mallorca.

Whether you choose to take a day trip out to sea or would prefer a sunset cruise, there are many options for you to select from when on the island.

Sample Local Wine

Whilst Mallorca may not be the first destination you think of when a wine-tasting holiday comes to mind, the island is actually home to quite a few small wineries that each produce several varieties of red, white and rose wine. Production on the island is still quite small-scale, but this allows visitors to learn more about locals’ personal history regarding the wine varieties that they produce and enjoy a much more meaningful experience when they sample the different flavours on offer.

If you want to properly discover the island’s local wine, we recommend booking a wine tasting session at a vineyard. At the very least, seek the opportunity to try a native variety when you dine out and ask for a recommendation of what will complement the flavours of your food.

Go on a Shopping Spree

As previously mentioned, Palma’s size makes it a great hub for those seeking the ultimate shopping experience when visiting Mallorca. However, the capital city isn’t the only great place on the island for its shop offering.

Avinguda Tagomago is Cala D’or’s main shopping street, which is perfect for those hunting for one-off designer purchases. Cala D’or is another popular holiday resort on Mallorca, which doesn’t only boast its high-end shopping front, but also has stunning beaches and a marina that is absolutely worth a visit.

Another great place to stop off for a great shopping spree is the many ports that are located around the island of Mallorca. Places like Port Adriano, Puerto Portals and Port d’Andratx are all great marinas that will certainly yield results if you’re hunting down designer labels and pretty boutiques.

Browse a Local Market

Something that Mallorca really does well are the many markets that are scattered through the towns and villages on the island. Not only are they a great way to explore the local produce and souvenirs on sale, but it’s also a brilliant opportunity to practice your Spanish if you make a purchase!

The main markets that pique the interest of tourists include:

  1. Palma Market

Palma’s market provides visitors with the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor shopping. Some of the stalls are located inside a larger shopping complex, whereas others are laid out in the traditional street format. Whatever you choose to explore, you will find local produce, incredible food and great souvenirs.

  1. Pollenca Market

Pollenca market takes place in the main market square, situated just outside the 18th-century church. The laid back atmosphere and numerous stalls to browse make this a very popular attraction in the town, particularly in the summer when there are many more stalls than during the off-season.

  1. Santanyi Market

Santanyi market is perfect for those who also want to stroll through the town’s traditional cobbled streets and marvel at the pretty, golden sandstone buildings. Held twice a week in the centre of town, the market provides visitors with a great insight into an authentic Spanish shopping experience.

  1. Alcudia Market

Being one of the biggest markets on the island of Mallorca means that Alcudia is absolutely worth a visit for its huge offering. Not only do you get the chance to browse through the many stalls, but Alcudia itself and its beautiful scenery are also worth exploring.
